Episode 11: The Técnico Tokamak

Friday, September 10th, 2021

It was transported to Lisbon in the late 1980s and adapted to help create a “new chapter in the history of nuclear fusion engineering and physics in Portugal”. Silence, vacuum and heat: electrons colliding with ions and transferring energy to them, as if they were people running into each other in the street. The Técnico Tokamak, also called ISTTOK, is contributing to what is one of the great challenges facing experimental physics today: trying to create a safe source of energy by reproducing on earth the process that powers the stars. And, as if that weren’t enough, it is also sought after by students from all over the world for the unique possibilities it offers for experimental teaching.

The story of the Técnico Tokamak in the 11th episode of the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”, which marks the 110th anniversary of the Instituto Superior Técnico.

Episode 10: The Optical Level of Brito Limpo

Friday, July 23rd, 2021

Built by hand, piece by piece, in the mid-19th century, the Brito Limpo optical level was one of the most brilliant tools built in the field of cartography in Portugal. It proved fundamental to solving problems in the field of determining orthometric levels and was crucial for measuring the altitudes of various parts of the country. This revolutionary instrument earned the Portuguese military officer a distinction at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, among other prizes. A copy of the six optical levels built by Brito Limpo is in the Técnico Civil Engineering Museum and its importance can be discovered in the 10th episode of the “110 Stories | 110 Objects” podcast.

Episode 9: The Pombaline Cage

Friday, July 16th, 2021

The Pombaline Cage became the symbol of one of the greatest challenges in the history of Portuguese engineering: the reconstruction of the city of Lisbon, which had been severely disfigured by the Great Earthquake of 1755. The so-called St Andrew’s cross-shaped structure offered good resistance to seismic action and can still be found today in many buildings in the capital. The most famous model is in the Civil Museum of the Instituto Superior Técnico. The history of the “Pombaline Cage” is covered in the 9th episode of the podcast.

Episode 8: The Torricelli’s Barometer

Friday, July 9th, 2021

It’s a 250-year-old barometer that has withstood revolutions, wars, the natural degradation of time and today remains almost miraculously intact. It’s not known how it ended up at Técnico, but it continues to measure atmospheric pressure with total efficiency, keeping its original material, including mercury and probably “remnants of the air that was breathed in the 18th century”. The story of Torricelli’s Barometer, in the 8th episode of the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”.

Episode 7: The Formula Student

Friday, July 2nd, 2021

From a broken motorbike engine, which served as the basis for building the first prototype, to the latest models of electric and autonomous vehicles, there are many stories and races in the Formula Student do Técnico (FST Lisboa) project. Initially designed on paper, at full scale in a Técnico corridor, the FST01 took shape in 2001, the model that occupies first place in the story shared this week in the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects” (7th episode).

Episode 6: The “Camões” Computer

Friday, June 25th, 2021

In the 1990s, dozens of students in the computer labs worked simultaneously on their programming projects and shared the 512 Megabytes of memory in the Camões Computer. The story of the first computer used by Técnico’s Computer Science students, in the 6th episode of the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”.

Episode 5: A 19th-century telephone

Friday, June 18th, 2021

In just a few seconds, it’s possible to travel almost 140 years, at the speed of the connection between a cell phone from 2021 and a telephone from 1882. At Técnico, a telephone built in the 19th century is the star of the Faraday Museum and helps the structure generate enthusiasm for science and education. The story of this device from the Museum’s philosophy in the 5th episode of the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”.

Episode 4: Chico, the Robot

Friday, June 11th, 2021

Chico is a robot that helps researchers at Técnico understand how the human brain works, bringing together engineering, neuroscience and psychology. Built in the image of a three-year-old child, this humanoid robot is one of the most advanced in the world in terms of its ability to move. The story of this “robotic offspring” in “Episode 4: Chico, the robot” of the podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”.

Episode 3: Técnico’s Rugby Ball

Friday, June 4th, 2021

After 23 years of waiting, the Técnico rugby team (Clube de Rugby do Técnico) has once again become national champions. This is just the most recent story of the many that “Técnico’s Rugby Ball” helps us tell in this year that also marks the 110th anniversary of the Instituto Superior Técnico. Adventures, stories of conquests and struggles and of an endless relationship between Técnico and a rugby team… in the third episode of the Podcast “110 Stories | 110 Objects”.

Episode 2: The PSEM’s Sustainable Car

Friday, May 28th, 2021

We tell the stories of the great “races” in the life of PSEM – the Mobile Energy Sustainability Project. It all starts with the GP14, the first sustainable electric car built by the project, which refused to drive in an international final and taught the group its first big lesson: how to overcome problems and learn from them. The successes, the awards and the stories of this group of Técnico students who are trying to “guarantee the greatest possible efficiency” in an electric vehicle. Find out all about it in “Episode 2: The PSEM Sustainable Car”.
