Episode 60: Crystals inside glass amphorae

It is a rare collection in Portugal that includes 24 large crystals preserved in glass amphorae, dating from the 1940s. The exact chemical composition of some of these crystals is not known, nor their date of origin or when they were brought to Técnico. But it is known that these alumens (inorganic single crystals) continue to attract people from around the world, and that some of the most important metals in chemistry are sealed inside these glass amphorae. Soon, they will be exhibited at Técnico – Alameda campus, in the corridors of the South Tower, as part of the museum collection of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
